Collaboration between Humans and (semi-)Autonomous systems

The development of (semi-)autonomous systems and their cooperation with humans is very important for future and current work in the defense and security domain. Interdisciplinary public-private consortia are called upon to apply for funding and advance research in the area of one of the three research lines, while paying attention to important universal aspects mentioned in the call.

The aim of this Call for proposals is to stimulate interdisciplinary research that contributes to the further development of cooperation between humans and (semi-)autonomous systems. In this field, technological and social innovation go hand in hand.

There is a need for further development of AI and (semi-)autonomous systems with additional focus on robustness and optimisation of such systems and their deployment. Special focus is on the successful transition to the use of (semi-)autonomous systems by government organisations in the security domain, both in carrying out the task in primary tasks, and in supporting processes. Addressing social aspects, including ethical, legal and behavioural issues at an early stage, so that they can already be taken into account in the design process, are essential to ultimately be able and allowed to deploy these systems as an organisation. Knowledge about processes of technology adoption are particularly relevant in this context.
